How to fish for fluke
When baitfishing for fluke (most common), I've seen 3 methods produce
successfully: (1) Jig Method; (2) Slow Pull Method and (3) the Sit
and wait for a bite method.
The first one, Jig Method is a lot of work. Basically, the idea
is to keep your bait moving so if a passing fluke sees it, he'll
want to eat that bait right up. So, you drop your line to the bottom
and keep lifting the rod, fairly rapidly, evertime the singer hits
the bottom.
The "slow pull method", as I call it, is like the jig
method, but much slower. Drop your line to the bottom and wait about
10 - 15 seconds then slowly lift the rod tip and wait for a bite.
If you get a bite, don't let the line go slack!! You'll be sure
to lose the fish. Always keep tension on a "jiggler".
The sit and wait method is the most relaxing method...wait for
a bite, and lift the rod tip when you get one. It's that simple.
Other tips
Make sure you are fishing in a moving tide. Fluke like lively baits
and they feed during these tides when the bait is moving.
Wind against tide. A wind blowing against a tide can ruin a fluke
fishing day. If you can, move to a spot where the wind does not
conflict with the current tide.
Netting a fluke: Always net a fluke by the head first. These fish
have a tendency to wiggle and swim their way out of nets if you
go tail first.
Ok, you have some basics there. The next thing to do is get out
there and give it a shot. If you have other tips, let me know and
I'll include them. I'll also add more to this area as time allows.
Enjoy!
