Montauk Fishing Report (Stripers, Bottom and sharks)

From Capt. Gene Kelly of MontaukSportfishing.com (June 12, 2006)

Star Island is holding it’s shark tournament, typically the biggest of the year with over two hundred entries, this coming Friday and Saturday. But so far there’s not much to report on the shark front. I know of only three charter boats that have made offshore trips so far this year, and the results have been disappointing, with only one blue shark taken. The furthest out the boats went was to forty fathoms, where you would expect to find more than one shark by now. It looks like a lot of fuel is going to be used because a lot of boats are going to be making long runs.

Inshore the bass fishing is holding up very nicely with some better fish showing up on Sunday, chasing squid around on the surface. The surf has been producing some nice fish as well, mostly for the local sharpies who know where to be and when to be there.

Bottom fishing remains slow, and is probably a big reason for the recession that is occurring with the party and charter boats. Friday, which is usually the second most popular day of the week for charters saw a lot of boats sitting in.

If you have been dreaming about entering the glamorous and profitable world of charter boat operators, here is your chance. Capt Otto Haselman has his FISHOOKER for sale. It’s a 25’ flybridge JC and Otto has a pretty good business. The time to buy is now so that you would be able to work with him to get to know the customers. Call him at 631 668 3821.
