Shark fishing is pretty steady, if not spectacular, but many of the sharks that you are likely to catch are makos or threshers. Star Island is holding it’s annual Mako Mania tournament this Friday and Saturday, and it’s too bad that threshers aren’t included, because it seems like there are more and bigger ones of those around.
The bluefin action seems to be over, probably until September, but the boats making extended trips are starting to pick away, with a mixture of yellowfins and longfins, along with occasional white or blue marlin and mahis. It’s a long ride out though with most of the action outside of the 400 line. Boats are coming in with anywhere from nothing to three or four fish, with not many nothings. The VENTURE had a good trip early in the week when he brought in eleven longfins, but eight of those were all caught at the same time. That’s the way it works. You make the lucky turn and you do good, or you make the unlucky turn and you do poorly.
Striped bass fishing is still difficult. I think we’ve been spoiled over the last ten years or so when we’ve had great mid summer bass fishing. Live porgies aren’t the answer either. You can catch fish with them, but no better than you will do trolling, and you’ll have to spend a good amount of time fishing for bait.
