Not Montauk, but worth noting (June 9, 2005)

I was at a meeting with some of my colleagues this morning. We had our breakfast meeting at the Hyatt Hotel on the water in Jersey City, NJ. The hotel overlooks the Hudson and NYC. Well, we were discussing some marketing ideas and I looked out the window for a peak at the water. There were 2 guys on the pier with poles in the water.

About 10 minutes later I look out to see one of them with a bent rod and he seemed to be fighting a fish! He certainly was. The other guy grabs a long gaff (12 ft.+) ans carefully pulls up a striper. The process was reversed when the gaffer then landed his own fish.

Of course my curiousity wasn't cured by just watching this from the window of the 2nd floor. I stepped outside and walked the pier to the end for a closer look. The striped bass were in the 20lb range caught on bunker chunks. Congrats to the 2 patient fellas on the pier!

(I only hope they didn't exceed their catch limit)

June 6, 2005 Montauk Report (Captain Gene Kelly)

I heard two lovely words on a TV weather report this week; “Bermuda High”. That means warm stable weather, and sometimes they hang around for weeks. It would be nice if it lasted until around mid September or so.

Around mid week the fluke fishing returned to what it had been leading up to Memorial day, with lots of fish and plenty of big ones. That lasted through Saturday, but on Sunday, the action dropped off again, temporarily I hope. There has also been a mini invasion of dogfish, but there aren’t so many that they can’t be avoided.

Striped bass fishing has been going along wonderfully, with most of the charter boats regularly limiting out, with medium type fish. Sunday, however, some boats started to struggle a bit. Maybe it’s a “Sunday thing”.

The MISTRESS made the run out to forty fathoms on Sunday. They found porpoises, whales and super clean water, but it was only fifty-one degrees, and there were no sharks in it. The CRICKET sailed all week, also looking for sharks, but has yet to have a nibble. The water should start warming up this week, so I assume that some blue doggies will be taken this weekend by the boats that go far enough out.

The Star Island Yacht Club has a month long shark tournament type thing starting around the middle of the month. They are going to tag some sharks, and anyone who catches one of them, will cash in. It only costs $100 to enter, and since the sharks can go wherever they want to after the initial tagging, entries are not limited to Montauk. Call Star Island at 631 668 5052 for more info.
