May 8, 2005 Report (Capt. Gene Kelly)

Don’t get nervous about not receiving any reports lately. For various reasons I didn’t get my winter vacation this year, and we finally got a window to get a week away and took it, just getting back last night.

But it looks like I haven’t missed much. The surfcasters have been picking away with some small bass, with occasional keepers, mostly on the south side, but the boats have yet to do anything.

As for the fluke, there are some fish being taken, and some nice sized ones, but it’s not really red hot yet. The feeling is that the waters are still a little on the chilly side.

On April 28th, Percy Heath passed away. The rest of the world knew Percy as the jazz musician (bass fiddle), playing with Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk and later on in the Modern Jazz Quartet. But here in Montauk he was more known for his passion for fluke, and it is ironic that he died the day before the fluke season opened.
