Montauk Fishing Report (October 4, 2005 - Capt. Kelly)
The weather this past weekend was drop dead gorgeous, and the fishing was great. And, a lot of people knew it. The parking lots in the marinas were as full as I’ve ever seen them, and I had to wait in line at Gaviola’s just to get a parking spot.
The Bass fishing is in full fall mode, with a lot of fish, and big ones. The charter boats are about equally divided between live baiting and trolling with both methods working. I think more charter boats would be using the porgies if it was a little easier getting them. A half day trip is a little short if you have to spend an hour or more catching bait, and with bluefish around, you have to make sure you get enough.
The surf guys are doing pretty well too, as shown by the standings in the Locals Tournament;
WADER DIVISION

WET SUIT DIVISION
John Bruno - 33.66 lbs
YOUTH DIVISION
Xen Angelidis - 13.84 lbs
KIDS DIVISION

For bottom fishing, you best head over toward West Grounds or Southwest Ledge. The only bottom bouncing locally is for bait.
Shark fishing isn’t real great, with one fish a day about all you can expect, but that one fish can be a good size mako or thresher, or even a blue marlin like the one taken by the JOY SEA fishing in the Butterfish Hole.
Yellowfins and longfins are still out around the 400 line, but nothing of consequence is happening with the bluefins, although there are indications that they might start to draw more interest soon. There have been some fish caught south and east of Block Island. Also, some bigger fish have been seen hanging around the scalloppers southwest of the Point. However, everything has been sporadic. The regs have also changed on the bluefins, and a fish has to be 47 inches to be kept and you are only allowed one per boat.
