Montauk "Sportfishing" Report

Baby Hurricane Ophelia passed by to the south on Friday night, but here in Montauk you wouldn’t know it, unless you happened to see all the charter boats tied up at the dock on Saturday, canceled by Ophelia’s public relations office.

The hurricane is one of the signs that fall is here, another being the false albacore that arrived this past week. Even if you didn’t see any of them, you could tell they were around by the abundance of flyguys flailing away in front of the lighthouse. I don’t know if they were having any success, but the falsies that I’ve seen would have been hard to catch. They only showed for a couple of seconds, and wouldn’t pop up again for another fifteen minutes or so, usually a couple of hundred yards away. But that will change.

The bass fishing is showing steady improvement, and there are enough bluefish around to fill in the slow times. Live baiting for the bass is not what it was last season, and the amount of blues around just adds to the frustration.

Porgies and seabass have become the choice of those bottom fishing instead of fluke. There are still some nice fluke being caught, but you have to be in the right place at the right time, and you need to spend a lot of time finding that right place.

Offshore the shark fishing is as steady as it gets, with bluesharks, makos and even some threshers being taken regularly. In fact the ratio of exotics to bluesharks seems to be improving.

I only heard of one boat tuna fishing after the “Big O” passed by, and it caught a couple of fish around the 43450 line, just about where fish were before. There are also plenty of mahi out there, with just about every pot loaded.

Surf action is starting to heat up, and the East Hampton Locals Tournament got started this week. It is open to East Hampton residents only, but you can get an exemption if you think you are open to the challenge. Check in at Freddies Tackle Shop (631 668 5520) for more details. You can also ask there about the Montauk Classic Surf Tournament which will be next weekend.

If you ever wanted to fish at Tropic Star Lodge in Panama but couldn’t get in because it was already fully booked, here’s your chance. I have clients booked there next March who have had to cancel because of the hurricane. If you would like to take over their booking, give me a call, anytime.

If you would like to have these reports sent to you directly, just drop me a note at CaptGene@MontaukSportfishing.com. And for more information about fishing in Montauk, you can give me a call at 800 377 1197 or check out Montauk Sportfishing
