Montauk Offshore Fishing Report (Sept 10, 2005)

Myself, Colin, John and Eric headed out yesterday on Harold C.'s Sea-Lark, a 35ft. JC, for an offshore day trolling trip. The forecast was for 4-5 ft. seas, but a swell. We left the dock (from the Montauk Marine Basin) at 3:35 am and had a very smooth ride SSE to the 450 line (about 8 miles north of fishtales canyon area), arriving just after 6 am to see the sunrise.

We put the bird out with a green machine trailer, then one more lure. As we started to let the third line out, the bird gets hit. Immediately we had 1 albacore boated...about 35 lbs. We started to let the lines out again and had another run from the GM spreader. Within the first 20 minutes, we had 2 tuna (albies) in the box.

We were finally able to get the full spread out with all 9 lines. About 1 mile from us a water spout formed...always an amazing site to see. Another formed just after the first dissapated to give us some amazing photo opportunities (photos to follow this week).

The NE wind picked up and started making for a slightly bumpy morning. However, we were too busy boating tuna to really take notice. Total tally for the day was 10 longfin tuna to 40 lbs, 1 skipjack, 4 mystery knockdowns, a huge school of dolphin and a wandering sea turtle. Water was blue/green and clean. All fish were caught within 1 square mile area.

Seas calmed down to 1 - 2 ft for a smooth ride home. Overall, an amazing day and much thanks to Harold for letting me be a passenger for a day! (Pictures of the water spout and fish to follow this week)
